Feedback: Household Waste
-
What are the personal challenges you face in trying to reduce household food waste?
-
We do not have enough space in the bin. We buy more than we need
-
Main problem is having food go out of date before I can get around to eating it (often happens with bread, less often with vegetables)
-
I tend to buy more than I need
-
I live in an apartment and don't have space for the compost
-
Cannot pre plan how to deal with meals and its waste
-
Lots of frikin plastic containers that supermarkets wrap meat and veggies
Give me an example
-
Going to Woolworths the displays attract me when I am hungry and I buy more than I need for a household of two people
-
eg A loaf will last me for a few days, but if I don't make sandwiches every day it'll be stale before I finish it.
-
e.g. vegetables go off easily even placed in the fridge)
-
also food waste attracts cockroaches and flies and it's cleaner and easier to put it in the bin
-
Like was planning to make sandwich at home, bought loaf of bread and pack of turkey. The intent was to make sandwich for few consecutive meals but both ended up wasted within a week (due to busy work schedule)
-
eg strawberries etc
What have you tried to solve the problem?
-
I try to only do grocery shopping on Monday one day a week
-
I also don't have a freezer, so I can't do what I used to - cook big batches and freeze them
-
not buy so much at a time
-
eat frozen veggies
-
Tried instant meals and recycle packaging
-
Buying fruit that doesn’t use plastic packaging
Did it work?
-
Yes. I do not take a large bag I case i buy more than I need
-
Haven't really come up with a solution. Smaller loaves run out too quickly if I do make sandwiches every day. I just get normal loaves and accept I may waste food.
-
but I can't estimate how much cooking time I may have as workload is unpredictable and cooking time is therefore restricted
-
you can only have so much frozen veggies and most green veggies don't store well in freezer
-
No, still had issue with dealing additional thrash and recycling
-
Kinda works, still a lot of plastic waste

-
No other solutions tried… grew a box of herbs no time to maintain , they died.
-
Online shopping – cost is high, packaging is excessive.
